Breaking The Silence
Jo Lernout and the Speech Revolution
E-BOOK WILL BE AVAILABLE SOON! STAY TUNED.
This ebook tells the remarkable story of Jo Lernout, a Belgian entrepreneur and speech technology innovator who left a lasting impact on the world. From his early days to the rise and fall of Lernout & Hauspie, this ebook explores the highs and lows of a career that shaped the future of technology.
A Humble Beginning
Jo Lernout's career started in Belgium, where he became interested in innovation and technology. His career took off when he was hired by prominent companies including Wang, Bull Computers, and Merck Sharp & Dohme, where he learned important competencies for the tech industry. But his work at Barco Industries was what really prepared him for his next ventures.
Jo Lernout, who has a strong interest in voice and language technologies, saw a chance to completely transform how people communicate with computers. Together with Pol Hauspie, his business partner, he co-founded Lernout & Hauspie Speech Products (L&H) in 1987. Their mission was to develop state-of-the-art speech recognition and translation software that would reduce linguistic barriers and increase accessibility to technology.
The Rise of Lernout & Hauspie
For its cutting-edge products, Lernout & Hauspie immediately became well-known. The business created speech recognition software with real-time language translation and accurate text transcription capabilities. This innovative technology brought in big business, like Microsoft, and boosted Lernout & Hauspie to the top of the tech sector. Jo Lernout and Pol Hauspie became global tech pioneers when the company went public in 1995 and saw a sharp increase in its stock price.
The Downfall: A Cautionary Tale
But the business was facing serious difficulties behind the scenes. Suspicions about questionable accounting practices emerged as Lernout & Hauspie quickly grew. The company was accused of using dishonest tactics to inflate its earnings in 2000, sparking a scandal that stunned the technology industry. After a sharp decline in the company's stock, a new CEO was hired. He started his assignment with great enthusiasm, given the enormous real assets the company still had, even after the downfall of the stock price. These assets included hundreds of patents, troves of valuable source code, large customers, and hundreds of top scientists and engineers. There was also a strong letter of intent (LOI) from Daimler Benz's Temic division to license all L&H technology for use in dashboards for a sum of US$ 300 million (see copy of LOI addressed on December 21, 2000, to Jo Lernout).
However, the newly appointed CEO mysteriously did not pursue these assets. Even though he was offered in October 2001 a 9-month extension of the Belgian Chapter 11 equivalent with a clear mandate to save the company, he refused. As a result, Lernout & Hauspie declared bankruptcy in 2001. In the end, it was an inside job that orchestrated the bankruptcy to 'grab' all these assets after a manipulated auction for a mere US$ 11 million in cash. The new owners (Scansoft, partially owned by Xerox) were able to restart, leaving all debts in the Belgian HQ, and later merged with Nuance. A Nuance spin-off, Cerence, recently announced that it had installed the 500 millionth car dashboard with voice interaction, which is essentially enhanced L&H technology. Nuance was acquired by Microsoft in 2019 for US$ 16 billion.
This ebook explores in great detail the elements that led to Lernout & Hauspie's downfall. You will discover the factors that ultimately caused the company to fail, mainly due to this internal reverse hostile acquisition. It's a tale of how the intricacies of business can occasionally cast a shadow over ambition and inventiveness.

Where is Jo Lernout Now?
The collapse of Lernout & Hauspie is not the end of the story. After the scandal, Jo Lernout's journey persisted. Jo Lernout's 2024 WCSA Distinguished and Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award was given in celebration of his accomplishments and is evidence of his ongoing impact and inventiveness.
